This is how the trails used to be marked in the Great North  and Massanutten Mtns. before the tree blazing system.  Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) made them around 1930 when building trails.  They were erected every 1/4 mi.  See "Guide to the Massanutten Mtn." by PATC.
