Can be a tree or a shrub.  Member of the Rose Family.  There are many kinds of serviceberry which are very hard to distinguish.  One of the earliest to bloom trees .  Name origin:  before the excavator days, people did not dig the frozen soil.  They did not bury those who died in the winter until spring.  The blooming of the serviceberry indicated that the soil melted and it's time to bury the dead, time for the burial service.
