AMC field Guide to the New England Alpine Summits, 2d Ed. Nancy G. Slack and Allison W. Bell. - this is not a guide book but rather a book on plants, animals and ecology. There is a companion book on Adirondack Mountains. 2 tiny very expensive books, worth every penny you spend.

Notes: there are actually 3 hikes here, but the 3d is so tiny I just put it as a waypoint on the map. Very beautiful area. Driving from DC, make sure to get or borrow an Easy Pass.

Warnings: very rocky, very steep, very windy, very cold. The hardest hike and backpack I've done. Harder then California and Arizona with Utah. Close but still harder than Tour du Mont Blanc.
